One thing I dont understand that maybe someone in research can answer. Analyst Positions are for undergrads straight out of college, while associate positions are for MBA's. How long does it take to go from analyst to associate without an MBA?
MBA's usually have 3 years experience in a related feild. Undergrads have 0-1 yr experience. With a Master's in economics and 1 year experience as a broker where would I fit in. I feel I'm over qualified for the analyst position, but underqualified for the associate position. Who am I competing with and for what position?
An answer to one or both ?'s would be greatly appreciated. |

The titles in research vs. banking are reversed.
In research, an analyst position is further up the food chain.
Typically undergrads are hired as an assistant or junior associate.
MBA?s/seasoned research assistants land associate roles. Depending on one?s level of performance and the availability of positions, it should take a couple of years to reach associate level. I?ve seen it happen quickly for some and seen others with mediocre performance never advance.
From there, you move up to analyst.
Just gauging by your background, you would likely never be considered for anything higher than an assistant. Broker experience will be completely disregarded as it pertains to your functions as an analyst. There are plenty of people with much better CV?s jockeying for those jobs, so take what you can get. After all, you?re getting these jobs for growth/learning potential, not status or title. If you?re good, you?ll move up.
