In Reply To: Thanks grundles, it seems you are well familiar with this position. I've applied to numerous Research Associate positions and for various reasons have not made it out the final round for most... Though I am anticipating alot of grunt and "bitch" work, do you think taking this position would be a good entrance into the world of equity reseach/pm or is it for a lack of a better expression a "dead-end" job. You're insight would be valuable. Thanks PS> would you be able to provide an idea of hours and compensation?
Message: if you want to make it to a PM position, sell-side ER is a good place to start...a lot of people look jump to buy-side ASAP as the hours are better and the appeal and content of being on the buy-side is more attractive...if you cant get a job on buy-side research right out of school, sell-side might be a bit easier ....i would not suggest stayin in sell-side too long unless you have a dyin urge to wait it out until, and if you are good enough to become an Senior Analyst...either way ER is a tricky place to start...people i know and worked with on sell-side were always complaining or waiting until they had enough time under their belt to jump to buy-side, but starting there will make your jump much easier...you do learn a good deal, but again the RA position entailed way too much dog $hit work for me...i got sick of answering someone else's call and preparing travel plans...etc. on top of trying to balance the analytical work hours - suck....plain and simple...you are in before most other people even wake up...you will have to be in the office no later than 6:30-7am, to prepare call notes, listen to morning calls, catch up on market news...on rare occassions (non-earning seasons) you might get to leave around 6pm but that depends on your team, your analyst and associates...during earnings seasons youll might be there on average until 8-9pm, but again it depends on your team, your bank, you coverage...etc... Pay - i got $65K/yr with 1.5 yrs prior exp...as an RA...and I was told to expect around 20-35% of salary in bonus....so is it worth it? some might think you can find better exper. with comparable hours while making $hit loads more money... good luck
