I am a recent college graduate with a major in finance, manga cum laude from a large but decent private school in Boston. I have internship experience as an equity analyst at and emerging market fund. I now want to persue a carrer in equity research, obtain my CFA, then go onto portfolio management.
My question is, I've just had my first interview with Merrill Lynch for a position as an Equity Research Assistant. Apparently this position is more administrative than it is analytical or research based.
Would anyone recommend this position as a good way to enter the equity research field as I would be in constant contact with the senior analysts and have the opportunity to take on smaller research projects? Or, will the task of answering phone calls and making travel arrangements keep me on the outside looking in?
Has anyone had experience in this position, and/or know of possible exit opportunities? Any information would be appreciated, thanks. |

its ALOT of admin work...basically they pay you to be exec. assistant with some tech. exposure while helping the Associates prepare models/updates...once you gain some experience and trust you will have more responsibilities (i.e. call notes, modeling...etc.) but you will still have to book flights, answer phone calls, expense reports....its a SHITTY mix and the long hours of doing both can wear you out...unfortunately undergrads start at assistants...so you had better think twice about what you wanna do if youre not one who enjoys (for lack of a better phrase) shoveling others shit....
good luck
