DE Shaw will work you to death, but experience is invaluable.
You have to have good programming skills.
In terms of the degree-we had a junior guy with master in electrical engineering from MIT, and a few years of experience, he got the job. But, most of the guys we have here are Ph.D's from Ivys. However, this does not mean you cannot get in.

Nearly all firms buy & sell side have quants. Look at the web sites of these organizations for some leads.
QWAFAFEW.
SQA - society of quantitative analysts.
CQA - Chicago Quantitative Aliance.
Society of financial engineers.
For hedge funds you are looking for Stat Arb funds or Systematic/disciplined equity funds. You can also look at CTA's if you are interested in commodities.
Some of the firms with the biggest quant departments are: State Street Global, BGI.
Good luck
