In Reply To: Help Author: SJU78 Date: Jul 11, 2006 2:49 PM EST I am out of college for 4 years now and feel a bit fustrated. I believe I have a good background... 2 years as an FA at Morgan Stanley... 1 year at Bear Stearns in their Wealth Management / Investment Advisory department and another with a Insurance BD in their Investment Consulting Group. In addition, while I was obtaining my BS in Finance... I had worked for my colleges endowment fund for 2 years where I was responsible for making investment decisions. All of this experience has not led me to increase my compensation much. I started out at 35k and now only making 55k with a 5 to 15% bonus. This doesn't sound right to me. I have several licenses (7, 63, 65, 31), a BS in Finance and 4 to 6 years related experience... and I am only making 5 to 10k more than entry level? What am I doing wrong? Any input would be greatly appreciated!
Message: Yes, you're underpaid. I am surprised that with so much job changes, you were not able to increase your comp at every place by at least 15-20%. Here is what I suggest now: try to get a good recruiter. If you are in NYC, try Execu-Search, they are reputable, try Abacus, they are also pretty good. Try to get a job in hedge funds, they pay pretty well compared to the rest of the street. Your license collection is pretty good. You will get there some day. I felt the same way a few years ago when I was doing work 2-3 levels above my comp. I took a leap of faith when market was not too strong, landed a job in hedge fund and have been happy ever since
