Message: What is a typical route to being a portfolio manager at a hedge fund or investment management firm? I'm working at a private equity firm right now, but believe that I would like to work with public securities in an investment capacity. Can a position as an equity research associate/analyst propel one into a hedge fund analyst/PM position? Is this a step that makes sense and would be favorably viewed for a switch to buyside? I feel like there's this obsession with IB when perhaps research is a better source for the toolkit (more in depth industry knowledge, specific kinds of financial modeling) that a HF analyst/PM might need -- am i missing something here? Also, does anyone know if an MBA is required (expected by interviewers) to become an equity research associate?
