So now I'm thinking that for institutional sales your getting a bigger portfolio to work with because of more money to invest, and more commissions because of more trades. However it is still a sales type of job, and I don't know how when analystresearch mentioned 'if you like finance too, its good for you.' Maybe you can clarify that more.
Do you get a possibility of a larger salary? Lots of coldcalling too?
I think having more complex transactions like options is port of institutional sales too.

If you are wanting to work for a mutual fund company and are trying to sell your funds to other business for their 401(k) etc. that would still include a lot of sales and cold calling (bigger commissions). I believe with this type of position you would need to do more hand holding of your clients and be on top of the investment industry. That way you could anticipate how your clients portfolio is going to be in 6 months etc.
However, if you are wanting to be involved in research then you would want to look at how the institutes (banks, mutual funds etc.) use their assets. In other words, what does a bank do with all the funds they have on deposit. What does a mutual fund do with all the funds invested with them. Where do they invest it in. This type of position is no sales and a lot of research
