How big are most investment firms? such as how many analysts and portfolio managers are there in the firm? How many analysts would work under a portfolio manager?
Also, how many portfolios does a n analyst and a portfolio manager generally expect to manage?
Thanks |

Size of an investment management firm completely depends on the firm, the client base, structure, etc. I think it is important to clarify different types of "investment managers".
There are mutual funds (pooled investment funds for individuals or institutions)and these are generally the largest investment managers. Many times companies like Fidelity, Vangaurd and others will provide mutual fund products as well as managed accounts for HNW or institutions. There are also smaller mutual funds and investment managers which focus exclusively on HNW. Smaller investment managers may have millions under management while I believe Fidelity has peaked over a trillion under management. These numbers encompass all products including mutual funds and managed accts.
Hedge funds are private partnerships which manage money for wealthy individuals and institutions(i.e. pensions, etc.). These are generally smaller in size than mutual funds. Though many larger non-hedge funds offer an alternative investment product which is similar to the hedge fund product.
I am not sure how all funds delegate responsibility but at my firm each portfolio manager specializes in a particular product and asset class(i.e. US Small Cap, Large Cap, Quantitative Equity, Emerging Markets Equity, US Short Term Fixed, etc.) and may manage mulitple funds, though many of the funds share the same characteristics but may be geared towards different investors (individual/instituitional, etc.).
