In Reply To: If you're young, and you want to "break in" to this field, you should already have a strong background in all of the Microsoft products... As a computer science major, this shouldn't have been a problem, right? Some guy wrote that you should know Bloomberg...that's hogwash. You type "news" and enter, and the news window comes up. There are tens of thousands of commands in Bloomberg, of which I doubt even an experienced individual knows more than a few. If you're trying to break into the back office part of IM, most places use some proprietary monkey software with a name like "Zenith" or "Optimatch" (I made those up). Trust me: you'll learn these applications quickly on your own out unrelenting repititious use. If you're trying to become a trader, most of the trading applications are web-based; again you'll learn them over time. Anyways, from what I've read here it doesn't look good for you. I mean, what kind of computer science degree did you get? Was it from a college? I have a computer engineering degree...from a college...so I know what kinds of things CS/CE majors know. Spreadshits [sic] and Excel (same thing) are some of them. In addition, I might have given you some credit if I thought you could slip in on the strength of your communicative abilities...That's a box it doesn't appear as if we'll be able to check off. However, if your father knows somebody, or you played a sport, definitely play it up. A lesser fund (i.e. one not concerned with making money) might pick up on that. Otherwise, try the IB world...they eat that sh*t up.
Message: Was there one piece of useful information in this post? If this guy is shooting for a front office IM spot (which it seems he is from his posts) having knowledge of bloomberg couldn't hurt. I use it all day long every day. I know more then "a few" commands. The fact that you think people (traders, analysts, PMs...) don't use bloomberg extensively in this field tells me that you have no idea about what you are talking about.
