In Reply To: Hi guys i'm a new member at vault. First and foremost i must say this is a very informative page, eventhough i dont have the gold member status and therefor could not view a lot of the resources as i liked. Nonetheless, great forum. First i would like to introduce myself and my current dilema: I am a recent graduate from Johns Hopkins with a degree in Computer Science. However after 4 years doing c.s i have come to the conclusion that perhaps this is not what i want to do for the rest of my life. And since i've always been pretty interested in investment and have recently been reading the book: Buffettology - which describes the success of warren buffet and the many of the selective investment strategies, it has really got me hooked on the idea of investment and in the pursuing of an investment career. I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice, considering my lack of background in business finance/accounting. What would be a possible route for me to take for me to get my foot in the door and start learning the trades. Do companies hire people with no finance background for analysts positions? and is analyst the entry level that i should apply for if i do apply? What about investment management, and how it is different than investment banking? And what about a possible career in investment or equity research? (since i've developed a good sense for research from computer science) Should i first start out by applying for part-time, or even temp jobs at investment management companies or investment banks to get some experience and learn, and maybe take a few econ classes in the mean time, then once i have the knwoledge and experience down - apply for a real position? I'm really at a crossroad right now, and if anyone could help me out or provide some input it would really help me out greatly.
Message: I think you have a good shot- especially at more quant oriented shops that would value strong computer and math skills over knowledge of markets
