What kinds of Operations jobs do you suggest shows the most promise for future advancement career-wise while at the same providing a respectable income?
Also, do Ops jobs provide a bonus in addition to salary?
Someone suggested I should go into Ops on the Private Equity side. Do you think this is wise or are there better alternatives within Ops? What would you do if you were me?
Thanks cutie! |

First, you have to decide where you would want to end up in a few years??a PM, Trader, Research Analyst, etc. If it is trading you would like to be in, then middle office P&L analyst is a good place to start. Any kind of controlling job is pretty good, that's if you have a degree in accounting. Personally, I had a choice of choosing between Business Analysis and Controlling for two different BBs...I picked controlling...stayed there a year, made some good contacts and once I finished my MBA, I was offered a job in FI research. I know a guy who took a job supporting traders and PMs making shit money and when one of the PM jobs got downgraded to Portfolio Analyst/Product Specialist...the guy was offered this job because he proved himself to be very effective in what he was doing. Now he is going through some training and is well on his way to become a PM in a few years or so.
Also, Business Management is not a bad gig, but you'd probably need an MBA and some experience (product knowledge) to get that kind of job. I know a few people who ended up being business managers after starting in operations.
I guess my advise would be, to pick the biggest name on the street and look for something that would sound interesting/challenging. Once you are in, then go talk to people in HR or even better talk to some hiring managers??find out what qualifications you need to get a specific job.
Finally, some firms have internal job postings, which makes it much easier to see what??s available and some firms don??t. I guess you could research this by posting questions on the message boards those companies have on this site. Good Luck.
