In Reply To: Thanks for making my point for me. To the first guy: Equity Research is not I-banking!! If you worked in the industry you would know this. Research is not centered around the MBA. Equity research is filled with people with solid industry experience or other types of grad degrees, MA, Ph.D., etc. Also, don't think for a second it is EASIER to get into top boutiques such as Wasserstein Perella or Lazard Freres vs. the bulge bracket. Boutiques are among the toughest I-banking jobs to get, and are even more elitist about who they hire. 2) About the French dude.. Europeans were never as enamored of the MBA degree as Americans, its a lot less popular out there. I guess this is a backdoor scheme for some with good language skills. Go to Europe, and try to lateral back to NY. I love my country too much. Any more examples. Bring 'em too me. Next.
Message: I don't know about your company, but at many (if not most) banks research is a key part of IB operations. In fact, research is often a unit under the IB umbrella. Analysts are called in for 'fairness opinions' on advisory/pitch work and if its analysts are influential enough can be the trump card in winning the opportunity to underwrite an issue (ever heard of Mary Meeker?). Also, research departments actively recruit MBA's - a good portion of my class has gone into research. Granted, a CFA or secular degree in a science can alleviate the need for an MBA, but I would guess half of Street analysts have an MBA.
