Message: The advantage is that in the two years or three years it takes you to make associate (assuming you do), 2 instead of just 1 will have been spent at WP getting a better experience than at the smaller place (I'm assuming its a small place that nobody has heard of and not Gleacher or something). Frankly, even if you know the head recruiter, I don't think you'll get in as an associate from a small unkown firm without an MBA. They have to many BB's from HBS, Stanford, etc applying. If I were a recruiter, I wouldn't let friends in unless I thought they were the best qualified. If you don't make associate which is entirely possible, WP can get you into the best bschools. Basically what I'm saying (but not very well) is that after 2 years at a small firm closing few or no major deals, people are going to look at that and say no I want someone else who for 2 years was closing big deals. This is less of a problem after 6 months or a year when you're not expected to be closing a bunch of big deals. Afterwhile, it becomes a problem though. Associate lifestyle is difficult just like M&A at Lazard or any BB firm.
