In Reply To: You gotta be a f$%&ing idiot to NOT recognize CAL TECH as, by far, the hardest school to get in to. I'm not a science person, and attended that really good school down the block from MIT, and know for a fact that whil Cal Tech aint the best all around school for undergrads, it is easily 1) the hardest school to get in to, and 2) the hardest school to succeed in. European schools dont factor in to the decision process for talented Americans (even accounting for the language barrier), but every smart mo fo around the globe would take a MIT or CAL Tech or Yale or Harvard or Stanford or Princeton or Yale over *Le French Frie* or Oxbridge anyday.
Message: I am the original poster regarding Cambridge and the Ecoles. First of all, you're taking all of this a little personally, aren't you. I recommend Decaf. My OPINIONS (and after all, no matter how certain you may be of your conclusions, they are still opinions) are based on observations of friends/relatives who are PHD candidates at the top engineering schools in the country including MIT and Cal Tech. Most attest to the superior reputation of Cambridge in the sciences. As far as the exclusivity of america's best schools vis-a-vis other nations, you have absolutely no clue what you're talking about. Foreign colleges even in third world countries like Korea are hundred times more difficult in regards to admissions due to such factors as a culture emphasizing "name brands" and the bizarre admissions process. That is not to say that these schools have better teachers, facilities, etc... However if you look at the average SAT for students from ASIA and normalize the scores for non-native English speakers, then the distribution is significantly skewed toward the higher end. Once again, this does not connote any superiority or any other related implication you might take. So just relax. It's just a discussion.
