Boutiques seem to be more prevalent and more admired on the buyside than on the sellside.
Working for a sellside boutique can have a significant negative impact on b-school admissions. The assumption for the b-school admission people is that "more well-known = better". There's no lack of people applying from Goldman or MSDW, so if your job titles are roughly similar, they'll tend to pick the person from the more well-known firm.
That said, that doesn't mean you should pick Pru over Robertson or Paine over Hambrecht - many boutiques have superior reputations than many much larger firms.
It doesn't have as much impact on moving laterally within the industry - if your boutique is solid, then people will look at you. |

I'm starting at a small boutique in July..this coompany usually promotes within 2 yrs. to associate. Do you think I could lateral into an associate position without an MBA, telling the BB banks that I was promoted at a young age? Would this be enough as well as my responsibility and knowledge. I'll be in m&a also..
