unless you work at lazard or wp (among boutiques), people tend to think you are 2nd tier. lazard and wp have excellent b-school placement. plus they pay more than the street average.

Boutiques seem to be more prevalent and more admired on the buyside than on the sellside.
Working for a sellside boutique can have a significant negative impact on b-school admissions. The assumption for the b-school admission people is that "more well-known = better". There's no lack of people applying from Goldman or MSDW, so if your job titles are roughly similar, they'll tend to pick the person from the more well-known firm.
That said, that doesn't mean you should pick Pru over Robertson or Paine over Hambrecht - many boutiques have superior reputations than many much larger firms.
It doesn't have as much impact on moving laterally within the industry - if your boutique is solid, then people will look at you.
