I am interested in equity research and know that financial modeling skills are important. What is modeling, exactly? Is it just putting a projected balance sheet, statement of income, etc.. into Excel? I've been told if I am able to go into a bank and present them with a model I have done on a company, that will be a big plus. Where do I come up with these projections? Any textbooks, CD-ROMs you might recommend to learn this stuff? thanks.

financial modelling is exactly how it sounds..i.e building replica miniature models of bank buildings...when you go to your interview make sure you have your model ready..the more detail the better!
