Why wouldn't DLJ over-pay for a tech banker right now? He'll guarantee them at least three or four IPOs this year! They managed to "buy" all of their other employees right at the top of the internet bubble. Now that's what I call timing the market! |

I agree that tech. will rebound, so it's always a good time to grab tech. bankers, right from Quattrone to tech. M&A Analysts. However, DLJ really mistimed the market: they offered their guarantee right as the market peaked; had they waited another ~10 days, they would not have had to offer their Associates such an increase since the bleeding to tech slowed considerably at ALL banks, not just at DLJ. But the bank made these guarantees and now they have to pay up.
