Good comments so far. It's not like you can't change after working for a year or so. Provided you come from a BB, I have friends who didn't like banking and went to trading and vice versa. Its not a selling point, but it can be done. |

Sorry, but the likelihood of switching from a trading (or sales) position to an Investment Banking position (CorpFin or M&A) at the Associate level is ZERO.
It won't happen.
If someone tells you that they know this guy who knows this guy who knows another girl who did it, then they are either full of shit or you are hearing about an extreme exception.
The reverse (IBD to Sales or Trading)MIGHT be possible, but it's not common.
Figure your shit out before you get to that stage of your life. You can experiment as an analyst and do a little soul searching during your MBA program, but you'd better be ready to make an informed career decision by the time you get to the Associate level.
