In Reply To: As an 2K trading analyst (Derivatives at BB) who spent the last two summers at different firms (one was eaten by Germans and one is crem de la crem to some), the most frequent advice I heard was 1) do what you like cuz it'll be what you do best which will get you the farthest, and 2) get into the best firm possible, get great skills (available in both IBD and S&T) and continue if you like the area you're in or attend B-school and do whatver you like afterward. Trading holds less "prestige" to people who know dick about finance, but is very reputable to those knowledgable of finance and investing. I think areas like Derivatives are great because while people may question your 'skills,' very few will question how 'smart' you are...
Message: What if you really don't know what you like? I have researched the living shit out of both S&T and IB, and I can't come to a final conclusion!! I can genuinely identify with the roles in both departments but I'm not sure which area best suits me. Don't think I'll ever know until it's too late either. I'm entering b-school, so what should I do? Is this what the summer associate position is for? In my situation would it not be wise to do summer associate in Corp Fin? I'm thinking this is the case because I probably won't be able to get a full-time Corp Fin Associate position without AT LEAST a summer associate experience. It seems like S&T would possibly extend the full-time offer to someone who did their summer in IB and not S&T. Therefore, if undecided wouldn't it be best to do summer associate in IB? If I don't am I really "choosing" not to get a full time IB offer, and by extension choosing S&T over IB? I'd really appreciate comments on this. By the way, don't tell me to study myself or the industries more. Believe me I've done it and the deadlock is for real.
