In Reply To: One more thing, The fact that SOME non-business or econ majors actually get jobs in IBanking is true but thats only because they went to the IVY schools. For the vast majority of other potential candidates, majoring in Mid 18th century italian poetry wont cut it.
Message: No, that's not really the case. When you're a finance major, they ask you about your courses because they want to see if you've learned anything - since most finance majors come from non-Ivy schools, they're a bit more suspicious about your intelligence level. Plus, it's a very easy thing to begin a conversation in. Probably the most preferred major is mathematics or physics. They like engineering majors as well. Business majors really don't handle complicated numbers as well as they think they do. Plus they're looking for a guarantee of high intelligence - performing well as a physics or math major pretty much is that. Beyond this discussion, your major is a very small part of the selection factors. How you perform at the interview is number one. Your work experience comes second. Your school is number three, with your grades fourth. Your major is number five, maybe - no more than, say 10%, of the decision. Also, don't assume that a finance degree necessarily makes a candidate look better. In fact, if you have weak work experience, they'll wonder "why couldn't this guy/gal get a good summer job?" while the French major's non-paying museum internship (or whatnot)could make them look a lot more interesting and enterprising than a finance major's mediocre or lackluster work experience.
