I am a student at Columbia. The neighborhood is safe. I feel more comfortable walking around here than I do when visiting friends or family in the suburbs, as here the streets are well lit and there are always people around.
The city, in general, has been cleaned up significantly over the last decade or so, and is now one of the safest large cities in the US.
