Whatever you do, make sure you have a reason for doing it. It's called being strategic. If you're smart and you follow basic steps to your professional decision making, then you will have no problem getting into b-school. You don't have to follow the traditional path. If you take an unconventional path, make sure that the job involves being analytical (market strategy, new technologies, etc...). There are three basic skillsets that matter:
1. Being able perform relevant analysis of a problem
2. Being able to make sound strategic decisions as a result of the analysis, and
3. Being able to execute the strategic direction you've decided on.
What this means is that your career choices will be analyzed in that framework when you go to MBA school. For instance, if you think you want to do global work, then a job with international exposure makes a lot of sense. But, short-term pressures make it hard to follow your direction, and this is where you can differentiate yourself for b-school. Point: DON'T TAKE THE FIRST OR MOST GLAMOROUS JOB OFFERED YOU, TAKE THE ONE THAT WILL HELP YOU REALIZE YOUR STRATEGIC DIRECTION. It makes it a lot easier to fill out the b-school app when you've been strategic about your decision making. |

If I were to take an offer with a small, no-name bank and work my ass off in m&a and get promoted and do well, this would be better than doing something smaller at a bigger bank? Is this what you mean?
