In Reply To: Tech M&A Banker or those who know: Does the CFA hold any value in IB in terms of promotion/salary or getting you into bigger and better places after being an analyst or of applying the knowledge in your work? Will it help you get into b-school? Do a lot of analysts (have time even) to do it? What's the feeling toward the CFA within the industry? I was wondering if its worth pursuing. Thank you.
Message: Research analysts sometimes get their CFAs in lieu of an MBA, or to augment the MBA. Most people consider the two designations to be academically equivalent. I don't know very many people on the banking side who have bothered to get one, simply because it is not a requirement to get the job, and the CFA knowledge set is only peripherally relevant to investment banking work on a daily basis. It is helpful to some extent to your application because it shows a high degree of achievement and study, but from a b-school perspective, because the two designations are academically similiar, may actually undermine your "why I need an MBA" story.
