Why would someone chose corp fin over trading or vice versa? Coming out of a top b-school do associates in either group earn as much as the other? work as hard? is the work particularly more or less intellectually stimulating in one area?

Corporate finance and trading are two completely different worlds. A guy who tells you that he's thinking of going into corporate finance OR into trading is a guy who hasn't done his homework and doesn't know what he's talking about. Coming out of b-school doesn't really earn you any merit on the trading desk. You could be a rocket scientist and still lose your head when the shit hits the fan. the advent of risk management has helped quant jocks get jobs on the desk but the bottom line is: balls and experience over an MBA. It's all based on merit and experience, not where (or even if) you went to b-school.
