What are the best banks for live deals per banker? I have heard that DLJ is high in that category, but I've also heard that all they do is pitch. I've seen posts that say analysts/associates at the best banks (GS,MS) may only close 3 or 4 live deals a year, and I have buddies at DLJ who have closed 6 or 8 (I've seen deal toys to prove it). What's the scoop? |

The best way to get live deals is to work in an M&A group at a top bank (like Goldman or Morgan Stanley). Typically the industry groups (high tech, healthcare, forest products, etc) do the pitching, since they are more familiar with the business. A merger or acquisition is the best "live deal" to work on, since there is so much modeling and so many potential deal structures.
Working in M&A at a top firms these days means that they have so many deals in the pipeline that pitching is not an effective use of time.
