In Reply To: There are a lot of rumors, half-truths, and outright fabrications floating around this board. It's probably to be expected, but it makes it hard to seperate the wheat from the chaff. I figured I'd try to give something back, since I remember stumbling through the investment banking recruiting process myself way back when, and I wish I had had a decent resource for my own questions. I have had the privilege of sitting in what I believe to be one of the best seats in investment banking: I've had the opportunity to work with or across the table from some of the best bankers in the business in a hot sector with an exciting product focus. I've been lucky to have been involved with a lot of transactions: equity, debt and M&A. It's been a great experience, with some pretty great highlights, as well as some pretty miserable lows. So I thought I'd offer to answer a few questions for people who are thinking about going into the business. I may not respond promptly, but I will make the effort to reply to serious questions. I will make no effort at all to respond to jackass comments and flame bait. As with all professions, investment banking has advantages and disadvantages, and I'll try to be as candid as I can. To my own background, I did three years as an analyst. I was an analyst recruiting captain for 2 years. At b-school, I sat on the admissions committee as a second year student. I've done associate recruiting for two years. I've done banking for a variety of industries, as an analyst and as an associate. My only caveat is this: there is a LOT of misinformation on this board, and in the recruiting process in general. Take my advice with as large a large grain of salt as I would advise you to take every other post with. Anyway, if you have any questions, fire away.
Message: Should more importance be placed on the group or the firm when making a career decision? Specifically, would it be better to work for an awesome group at a "lesser" firm or a mediocre group at a "stellar" firm. A lot has been said on these boards about CSFB Tech, so I will use them as an example. Would you choose a CSFB Tech or a Morgan Power & Energy offer? Obviously, the best option would be to work for a stellar group at a stellar firm, but not everyone is that lucky. I would greatly appreciate your thoughts. Thanx.
