Bankers in Canada will handle for the most part Cdn companies. However, foreign firms will go to Cdn companies when they need Cdn expertise and networks.
There are 2 models for US banks. The Merrill model with their sale and then repurchase of retail operations. Clearly, the advantage that ML has here is its ability to do MJDS for Canadian companies - cross-border offerings - and distribute domestic retail. They have however moved towards the traditional US banking model by firing most of their Midland staff and using their NYC resources more. Other banks have an origination presences in Canada but most execution is out of NYC. ML is by far the most present US bank in Canada; they have S & T and research out of Toronto. Most US banks will cover Canadian co's out of NYC.
Hope this helps. |
