I would both agree and disagree with my classmate at Hopkins (hehe...small world...however, i won't name the ibank i'm going to).
Your major matters not at all - just show a sincere interest in finance and know CAPM and 3 other common accounting principals.
As for your school - it matters, but to a lesser extent. Just because a bank doesn't recruit at your school doesn't mean you won't get an interview. It will be more difficult, and will take more initiative however. At JHU few firms recruit for ibanking (few people 5), yet I can easily name 10-15 students here going that route next year - everything from bulge brackets to mid-levels to boutiques.
Surprising (or perhaps not) about half the people I know who got offers (note: i'm talking about offers, not those who accepted)were engineering majors.
On the other hand, as far as a pure academic reputation is concerned, the a JHU sheepskin usually conveys a strong education (even if it is in a "silly" major).
As a side note, in my months of interviewing, I met more people from UT than most Ivies.
I probably didn't answer your question, but hopefully here's some points to keep in mind.

I am working in NY next year and I agree with "most" people who right on this thread. I was speaking to somebody in CPD and she told me that this was a really strong year for kids getting into IB.
All that is great, but what about consulting firms. That is what I really wanted to do, but alas, i found that getting an interview with BCG, KPMG, Bain, Mercer, D&T and Mckinsey, or any preeminent firm was next to impossible!! If this is such a kickass, comparable to the Ivies school, how come these firms don't come (besides Mckinsey)! I was speaking to a fraternity brother of mine who now works for DBAB and he told me that at least for (I-Banks) many of them view Hopkins as an untapped pool if students where they really don't have to fight with other banks to compete for the best kids. Great, but that's not helping me now.
Honestly, does anybody out there now any alums that work at BCG, Bain etc? If there was one thing that I could change about CPD, it would be for them to at least try to get these firms here.
