Since I'm not an employee of any of the bulge bracket firms I can provide a more objective viewpoint as to which firms comprise the list. The following are a list of bulge bracket firms in no particular order:
Goldman
Morgan Stanley
Lehman
CSFB
Bear Stearns
Salomon
Maybe Merrill
While other firms have made large inroads in growing their businesses, these listed are the bulge bracket firms. Certain Section 20 banks (e.g.-Chase) and Foreign Banks (e.g.-Deutsche), have increased market share, revenues, etc., and have made the market more competitive for larger transactions. Also, other very respectable firms, (e.g.-DLJ) are not bulge bracket, but are usually highly rated in certain niches such as high-yield. Previous commentary of including or excluding certain firms because of asset size, earnings, etc. is not a true barometer due to fluctuations in certain firms focus that may or may not have had a positive impact (e.g.-CSFB's emerging market losses). You cannot compare a firm like Chase, that has a huge bank lending group, with a firm like Lehman.
