Most all banks have a prop desk, or make prop trades. Any bank that makes markets in any kind of Option is engaging prop trading due to the fact that they are net long or short vega(bucketed) in different strikes or time to expiry. Anyways, even basic commercial banks like Sanwa, Republic, WestLb, BofA have prop trading going on. If making descisions on large fixed income positions or derivatives, you are prop trading. As for specific depts? I know CSFB has one, Bear, Goldman, WestLB, DLJ,JP Morgan has stuff about it on their website!! and many others.... Most will be a risk arb type desk, or a fixed income or option arbitrage operation. Great market makers are able to do lots of prop trading as well. I worked for one place, and there was one guy(24) who was allowed to spec as much as he wanted in futures etc.. because he was good!! I think that this kind of a position is something you make where you are, not necessarily handed to you. I say this after much research, and the fact that my 5-10 year goal is to have a very successful career on the Street in derivatives market making and "eventually" prop trading...
