In Reply To: You ask a good question, one that I think merits a well-thought out response rather than the drivel that was posted in the earlier message. 1.Even more important than your major is the prestige of your school. Wall Street firms recruit almost exclusively at Ivy/Stanford/MIT/Amherst type of schools. If you are not in a top school, then you should transfer to one. Otherwise, it is a very tough road to travel. 2. Nobody cares what you study in college. I-Banking firms only care about your performance in the classes you took. Study what you enjoy and the rest will take care of itself. Bankers from my school studied everything from English to Physics. Remember, what you should get out of college is the ability to reason through problems and express your ideas. I would suggest you do not ignore the liberal arts or the hard sciences as they are both essential to building these skills. A rigorous, balanced curriculum at a top school will prepare you well for any job that you want. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!
Message: I also agree that the school rep is the most important. That being said, I disagree with the other postings that any major will do. I thin what they are trying to say, or what at least in my opinion is true, is that any major within some bounds is fine. Any of the sciences, and a few liberal arts majors accounts for the majority of non-business majors. What they are looking for is analytical skills and likely you develop those in hard and social sciences (i.e. physics, politics). If you really like art history, i owuld recommend a minor in economics. I am a finance major and honestly becuase i am interested in it. It helps in the interviews but i found interview questions to be much more personal and situational that lacking a fiannce background is not a hindrance. However, when you are trying to convince the interviewer that you want to do IB, a finance or eco major helps. They also say that business majors have a faster learning curve but eventually the others catch up. Bottom line, if only business majors where successful in IB, they would be the only ones being hired for analyst position. As we know, this is not the case, so NO, business major is not a requirement, but it migt help. Then again, ivy league schools are more frequented by recruiters than top uindergrad business programs. Last thing. Do not do a combined MBA as mentioned by someone earlier. Schools that offer that are ususually not competitive or prestigious enough. If your school requires a 2 yr working expeirience, then i think it might be better.
