As a caucasion male with a middle to lower middle class childhood, if I apply to work at a firm you start, will you judge me by what I am, or by what I can bring. How will I be judged for recruitment purposes. What parameters will you seek out in recruits for your new firm.
The answers to these questions will show your perceptions of how things should be, as opposed to how you think they currently are. Do you want to correct for past acts, or do you want to lead by example. History is behind us, what kind of future do you proscribe to.
Just curious.
ps, I could also bring up the age issue, but since you didn't address that then neither will I. |

I would recruit based on educational background (not necessary to have attended a top school, but someone who made the best of whatever institution they attended), work experience, enthusiasm, ambition, a desire for continual learning and self-improvement, self-motivation, manageability, personality fit, etc, etc.
I would never discriminate in my hiring decisions, I would simply look for the best fit in terms of the position at hand and the candidates being interviewed. That being said, it's important to note that the desire, the passion & the enthusiasm that a candidate displays during an interview would probably make me favor that candidate over another candidate with the "traditional background" who does not possess that certain spark.
As a WASP, I don't expect you to know what it's like to be a minority, and the discrimination, either direct or subtle, that we have to deal with day in and day out. So please don't try to turn things around. I have friends from all different types of backgrounds, WASPS included, and I'd like to say that I judge people based on whom they are as individuals, rather than as a member of any particular group.
