I currently work at what anyone would consider a top 2 I-bank. I want to dispel some of the myths I am reading here for you. First, if you want to get into I-banking you will do so easily out of Stanfor and Harvard because there is just not that much relative demand for I-banking from those schools. At Wharton, almost everyone wants to do I-banking. At my firm we received over 500 resumes for a handful of summer position from Wharton.
As far as succeeding in I-banking that is a different story. If you do not have a financial background, going to Harvard or Stanford is will put you at a disadvantage because these schools simply do not prepare you for an I-bank. I do not mean to disparage these schools with my remarks. They are fine schools and probably prepare you for many other jobs better than any schools. However, I have seen countless MBAs from these schools just get killed in I-banking because they just don't have the background. If you do have a financial background (ex-analyst, CPA, etc), you probably don't need a Wharton, Columbia, or Chicago MBA education to do well in finance.
Make no mistake, many Harvard and Stanford grads succeed on Wall Street and can get jobs their relatively easy. However, for those of you who are not "quant jocks", Wharton, and I believe, Chicago and Columbia will prepare you well.
As far as any of these schools giving you a golden ticket, that's just BS. They give you opportunities that others may never get, but what you do with those opportunities is solely up to you! |

I am an HBS guy who worked at Goldman and I am angry with Harvard because they really do not teach MBA finance at all. If you are smart in your first year, you will get to know the analysts well and use them for your benefit. Using what you have got is all you learn in B school. PS. I was shocked to find a lot of ex-analysts at Goldman who had made associate without the MBA (what a savings..)
