In the internet industry, I've found a suprising lack of thank-you notes from interviewees. I guess it's the tight job market and fast paced environment. But I think that a quick, 3-5 line follow-up email is a good idea--particularly for a business development person who benefits from demonstrating strong networking skills. Just remember to ask your interviewer for their business card before you leave. I can't imagine it would ever hurt a candidate as long as they wrote something appropriate. Although the disclaimer here is that it really makes no difference whatsoever in the end--no one loses points for no thank-you note. An otherwise good candidate will get hired regardless of whether they sent a note. Paper letters sent through the mail, on the other hand, will be viewed as suspect in the internet arena. |

Some people are still uncomfortable with email but that number is dropping fast. If they have an email address on their business card, you should feel free to use it. With email, you are also much more likely to get a response than you are with a letter.
