I'm all for etiquette, mixing the 'old' with the 'new', but for this situation, I don't think the 'new' serves your purposes of being remembered in a 'solid' way, so to speak.
Old traditions/etiquette die hard and the time and effort it takes to find stationery and create a handwritten note of thanks, signed with your actual signature, means so much more than an email message--even if the message is identical.
As the previous respondent intimated, we have to be careful of how we use technology to further ourselves. It has a tendency to re-inforce distance & coolness, even if it's not intended. Warmth, genuine-ness, integrity are the messages that you want to get across here--whether you actually want the job or not. You never know when that act of kindness could be the catalyst for something else positive to occur in your life! Soooo, do the handwritten thing. You'll feel better about yourself after writing it, too. Good luck!
