It seems there are two questions here: (1) Should you send a thank you after an interview ? (2) Should you use e-mail or US Mail ?
(1) I would appreciate it if you career counselors out there would keep advising your charges NOT to send thank you notes. That way, I will keep beating their brains in, as I compete for jobs against them. I just received a job offer today, in part because I sent a letter to each person with whom I interviewed, that focused on an element during our discussion. Yes, I have to keep my wits about me to remember what was said, but that's what makes it an interview, not a beauty contest.
(2) By all means send e-mail. It's SOOO personal. When you get the e-mail address wrong (if the company will even give it to you) and the message ends up in Internet Hell, my 24-lb. personalized stationery with matching envelope will be in the hands of the decision-maker. Who do you think wins, then ?
You know, NOT everything should happen on the technology highway, just 'cause you know how to drive there... |

I think you are responding to the wrong person. Who are you arguing with? I am the only person in this thread actually identifying himself as a career counselor, and your letter proves my point. Thank you/re-cap notes are deal-makers, especially when it's a close call between candidates.
BTW, If it's Thursday and the decision is being made Friday, the 24lb bond isn't going to help as much as a fax (or, third choice, an e-mail). If no time constraint, I also recommend hard copy by snail mail.
Kind regards,
Scott Bennett
