Since there will always be a question on whether to send an e-mail note or one written on paper, and since there is no absolute correct answer, why not send both??
I recommend a short e-mail note immediately after the interview-this shows a sense of immediacy and responsibility-and keeps you fresh in the mind of the interviewer right after the interview. Then, a more substantive letter which not only thanks the interviewer(s), but relates your interest in the position. This approach gives you two chances to make positive imoressions on the decision maker.
