What is the typical stock options offered to a senior Internet developer when joining an Internet Startup? What are the magic numbers?

Pre-IPO company: Around 20000+ options, but very crappy salary and low benefits, i.e. health care, disability, etc. etc.
Post-IPO company: Around 500 to 2000 options, good cash, benefits, etc.
