Hi. I was interviewing at a small startup but I still wore a suit because I had always been told that no matter what the job, you should always wear a suit. I had also been taught to be talkative in an interview but still fairly formal. However, the person interviewing me was wearing shorts and put his feet up on a chair and kept tapping his pen. Now, does this mean I can loosen up too? I mean, should I have ripped off my tie and been like, "thank god" or something? I guess I'm worried that I came off too stiff but it seems to be a no win situation. I just don't think I'd feel right walking in without a tie or anything. Does anyone have any suggestions for the next time this happens (I'm applying to a bunch of dot-com's)? THanks. |

I work at a staffing agency and was interviewing a college student for a temp Receptionist job. In the middle of the interview, she takes out a map, completely unfolds it (holding it up so that her face disappeared from my view) and starts routing out her next destination all while I was still asking her a question about her previous experience. The funny thing is she answered my question from behind the map!! We weren't even close to finishing up the interview but at that point, I figured that she must have had somewhere more important to go so I ended the interview. The student called me a few days later and asked (with a mouthful of food over the phone) if she got the job. My response,"Sorry, the company went with a more qualified applicant".
