The problem with interviewing is that there is always a subtext to any conversation, a common thought pattern that exists on both sides of the table: "Do I want the position more or less than they want me", and vice versa. This inevitably plays itself out during a salary negotiation.
However, politeness can often smack of desperation. The best technique is to be cordial, yet confident. Nobody wants to hire an ass kisser, and even if they do they certainly won't pay the person a competitive wage!!!
