Working Visa in US |

I currently have an H1 visa, which - for those of you who are not familiar with it - is a work permit that lets you work only for the employet that hired you. If you ever wanted to work for someone else, you would have to go through the whole process again and get a new work visa. This process is supposed to take 4 to 6 weeks, but because of quotas, slow bureaucracy and what not, may take up to 4 months. Legally, in the meantime, you are not allowed to work.
I currently work for an internet company, doing project/account management. The pay is low, and there ar no benefits what so ever. (Ever tried to get over a throat infection with a fever without antibiotics because you can't afford it?)
Let me just vent and say that it's not the ideal situation. You feel trapped. I never thought, coming from a western, modernized country, that I would ever have to be stuck in such a limiting situation.
I've been looking for a job for a few weeks now. Have been going through recruiters and that's how I get the best interviews. They never asked about my status, and I never said anything. One thing I am nervous about is when to tell the employer that I need sponsorship. I am defintely goign to wait till I get a job offer, but not sure when and how to address it once the offer comes.
I know most Americans never even think about things like that, being citizens and able to work anywhere. But there are so many non-Americans working LEGALLY here, and I think even Americans may find this issue interesting.
Thanks for any replies. |

Hi,
I recently came to the US to try to get employment and a work visa. The bureaucracy is absolutely amazing.
I came over on the visa waiver program (90 days) and didn't expect that you couldn't change status into a working visa. If I had come on a visitor visa, the case would be different.
My boyfriend is currently in Boston studying and I was hoping to get work over there. I am now back in Australia working at a job I don't like and was considering coming back.
So if you have any leads on good employment agencies etc - please send it on would love to know how you go and get some tips on how to best beat the system.
Thanks,
AM
