I am posting this request on behalf of someone who posted a question to me as vault.com's HR moderator, and is looking to change careers to enter the IT field and is in need of career guidance:
What is your suggestion concerning getting started in the IT field, keeping in mind the market after six months or one year: Out of these 3 fields, which is the best?
1) Database (with the latest Oracle 8i which is designed specifically to support the demanding requirements of Internet applications).
2) Web Programming (Applications Java, Perl, HTML, CGI)
3) Networking (MCSE2000 targetting later on CISCO CCIE)
Would you discourage me from going through a full-time university degree in computer science and suggest I should take courses and certifications instead?
