Again, thank you for considering my situation and giving me some feedback. I really appreciate it.
You mentioned that if I perform well, I should expect a significant increase. Are you referring to salary, options, or both? They say that the way they will do bonuses hasn't been decided on yet. Should I have specifics on bonuses in my contract?
Is it legitimate to ask for a 6 month review when I negotiate?
Regarding the salary, I'd initially be doing research and working on a 2-person team to develop international deals and partnerships. So it's looking like it's going to include all three functions you mentioned.
Please comment again when you have time, this is invaluable to me. My sincere thanks. |

How/whether you should negotiate a bonus depends a lot on the size and credibility of the company that you are working for. If it's a big, well established company, then it's best to negotiate as much in advance as possible, since they have their HR bureaucracies to satisfy later. Similarly, if you have doubts about the principals of the company, it's best to get bonus like promises in advance. However, if it looks to you like a small or medium sized operation run by legitimate managment, then you maybe ought to give them a little faith and not ask for everything in writing up front. You can always talk with the principals later to work things out if there are issues.
If you perform well, you should get more salary and options after six months. At that point, you will be much more marketable since you will have six months of Internet experience, and will be able to move into a more responsible position elsewhere. Yes, this market is crazy enough right now that six months is the meaningful number. So, at that point, you will be a Net veteran, able to command a bigger salary. Because of this, I would certainly ask for a 6 month review. That is the most important thing to get upfront, unless, again, you're talking about a very informal organization where putting things down in writing won't matter anyway.
Salary: based on your response, my guess would be 55K-65K. But it could be more, up to 80K. I work in the Alley, and salaries appear to be a bit lower here. Depends a lot on the company and their perception of the value of their options package. In other words, if they think that they're headed for a big IPO in 3 months and that you'll be set for life (unlikely given the size of the options package, incidentally) then they'll be saying that you're taking less salary due to the equity.
