I had a disagreement with my ex-employer at the time of the layoff, but I agreed to do a certain amount of continued work for a client that I had been donating my time for pro bono since January. Now they are saying they will deny my unemployment claim. I don't know why yet - I suspect they are trying to extort further work from me (pro bono).
What grounds do they need to deny my claim, and what can I do to protect myself? I suspect they will try to claim that they let me go for cause, because we were not on good terms when I left. I just want to move forward, but they won't allow this.
How do I walk away and still collect unemployment? |

This is the Cali website, I think: http://www.edd.ca.gov/uiind.htm
If they try to fight your claim, they have to have a good reason. Tell your story to the office. They're usually more helpful to the claimant than the business, I hear.
Get some former employees to back you, and find a notary for their statements.
Your story sounds pretty legit; don't let your employers tell you that you can't have what your legally entitled to.
