the best way to find the kinds of firms you are looking for is to sit down and check out websites. try running a search on google for design or multimedia firms in your area, and look at their sites. check out some of the other projects they have done as well.
if the agency's work exploits the medium without gratuitous use of technologies, gets the message across clearly without looking like everyone else, and truly excites you, send a resume and/or note to the creative director.
also, when you see any other sites that you really love, check to see if there is a credit on them as to who did the work. after a while, you'll begin to get a feel for which shops are producing the kind of work that you want to be doing, and you can move ahead accordingly.
