Butterfields, the offline auction house that online powerhouse ebay purchased in the spring of 1999, announced that it was laying off 15% of their workforce. Apparently, they feel that the auction world has been drastically altered by the presence of huge on-line auction sites. Will there still be room for auction houses? I would say yes because they tend to auction much higher-end merchandise than, say, a beenie baby. |

Well, when there's online competition, and you ignore it and don't go online yourself, it's your own fault.
And also, could this have anything to do with the recent Christie's/Sotheby's scandal as well?
