While much is made out of the power of the internet to bring different people from all over the world together, is this really accurate? I was reading that, in fact, the gap between African-American who have home access to the internet and whites has actually grown. Is the internet going to become another 'product' that is only available to the rich or relatively well-off few? What initiatives are being taken to make sure that the internet is available to all? What about free service? Couldn't the large ISP's offer, limited, free service so people could at least get a jump on the technology? |

There are plenty of free services, and will continue to be. AOL almost gives away their product. So, no, basic internet in america will not be the province of the uber-class.
In Europe, and Japan, things might be different.
