HI,
I wanted some advise regarding a current situation that I am facing right now. Currently I am working as a VB/SQL programmer, although my department uses oracle as well, but there are other people working on Oracle. we were just informed that one of the oracle programmer will be leaving our group and will be relocating to another city thus making a space for one person, and since eventually I would like to work with Oracle as well as become more efficient with VB and SQL server. Don't get me wrong, I am really happy at what I am doing as currently my position allows with a great opportunity to enhance my current skills and also learn the business but I would like to position myself to learn more so my question is how do I let me supervisor know that I would like to also do what the other person(who is leaving) was doing, and show him motivation to learn more instead of giving him the feeling
that I am unhappy at my current position.

Telling the boss that you are interested in expanding your skill set (and therefore worth to the organization) might be one way to communicate your interest. If the position might be vacant for awhile and you know enough Oracle, maybe you could offer to cover, 'just to keep things going'? Shows you as a team player! You might want to look at the reasons for the pending vacancy- there might be opportunity there. IE- perhaps there are some projects you can work on? Collaborate on any mutual projects? Look for other business to bring in?
Anyway, I wouldn;t be shy about letting'em know that you want to learn more. Unless there are other indictors you are unhappy, go for it!
