In Reply To: I have been told so many outrageous things about what apartments cost in HK. I am hearing that US$1000 will get you a really nice place and also that US$3000 is the least that you can hope to spend for a decent place. Can someone settle this for me? Tell me how much per month you spend (HK$ or US equivalent), the approx. size of the place, and the area that the building is located in. Also, a little info on the process of actually finding a place would be nice. I assume that the company will hook me up with a broker, but if not, I have some friends over there that may be able to help me out.
Message: I'm a hong kong student studying at a US university, aiming to work in a IB after I grad. With regard to the questions about living in hk: Rents--the HK real estate prices has dropped somewhat from it's peak back in 96-97. You can probably get a pretty decent flat at around 20000 HK in the midlevels. But overall, HK IS one of the more expensive cities to rent a flat in. Apartments are somewhat cheaper in other places, and since the public transportation network in HK is probably one of the best in the world, it doesn't really matter where you live. Central is EVER so easy to get to...when I first came to the US, I was pretty frustrated at the public transportation here coz I was used to the efficiency in HK. Broker: real estate is a HUGE market in HK...you can find ads in the newspapers and lots of real estate offices littered around the city (tho there probably won't be any in the main part of central). Asking friends/company for brokers with a good reputation would be a good idea. The larger chains might also be more reliable (tho sometimes they charge higher premiums). Hope that helps. Email me or post here if you have any more questions. I know HK pretty well... Anyway, I have some questions of my own about IBanks. 1. Is it true that the working hours are long? I have friends saying it's 7-11. 2. Would a summer internship at a IB help to getting a IB job when I grad? (I'm still in my second year) 3. Which is better? IB in NY or HK/Singapore? 4. What would be the corporate culture of some major IBs? Say GS, MS and ML. Thanks
